The earliest known forms of eye protection were worn by the Inuit people of the Arctic region. They crafted goggles from walrus ivory or pieces of wood with narrow slits to shield their eyes from the harsh sun rays reflecting off the snow and ice.

Another early form of what we know today as sunglasses can be found in 12th century ancient China where they were made from flat panels of smoky quartz. Whilst these were a slight improvement over the Inuit model, they were more used to conceal the facial expressions of judges rather than for sunlight purposes.

When Were Sunglasses Invented?

The Renaissance and Beyond

Tinted lenses were made from various materials in the 18th century, such as glass, which became popular among the elites of Europe.
