A History of Sunglasses & Styles

Sunglasses have become a crucial accessory in today’s fashion world and they can make or break an outfit. But when were sunglasses invented and where have they come from? Sunglasses have a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries and have evolved from simple eye protection to a must-have fashion statement.

We’re delving into the journey of sunglasses, their remarkable evolution and the diverse styles that have emerged over the years, including those we have to offer as your ultimate destination for stylish eyewear.

The History of Sunglasses - Ancient Origins

When we say that the origin of sunglasses goes back for centuries, we really mean it. The concept of sunglasses dates back as far as ancient civilisations. The earliest known forms of eye protection were worn by the Inuit people of the Arctic region. They crafted goggles from walrus ivory or pieces of wood with narrow slits to shield their eyes from the harsh sun rays reflecting off the snow and ice.

Another early form of what we know today as sunglasses can be found in 12th century ancient China where they were made from flat panels of smoky quartz. Whilst these were a slight improvement over the Inuit model, they were more used to conceal the facial expressions of judges rather than for sunlight purposes.

When Were Sunglasses Invented?

The Renaissance and Beyond

The Renaissance period is where we start to see sunglasses emerge as a symbol of style, status, and sophistication. Tinted lenses were made from various materials in the 18th century, such as glass, which became popular among the elites of Europe. Not only were they used for their practical benefits, but also for their aesthetic appeal.

But once the 20th century hit, modern sunglasses truly came into their own and became the fashion staple that we know today. During the early 1990s, silent film stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo were often seen wearing oversized sunglasses which added to their air of mystery.

The Birth of Modern Sunglasses

The modern era of sunglasses began in the 1930s with the invention of the iconic Aviator style by Bausch & Lomb. They were originally designed for U.S. military pilots for eye protection during high-altitude flights. But they quickly gained popularity among civilians and became synonymous with classic, timeless style. Aviator sunglasses remain a popular style today.

After the success of the Aviator, the Wayfarer grew in popularity in the 1950s and also became another iconic sunglasses style. The Wayfarer was designed by Ray-Ban, and its bold design and distinctive shape made it very popular amongst trendsetters and celebrities. This solidified sunglasses' status as a cultural icon.

Sunglasses didn’t stop there and throughout the 20th century, sunglasses continued to evolve as designers experimented with different shapes, materials and technologies. For example, in the 1970s oversized round style sunglasses were most popular, whereas 1990s fashion preferred minimalist designs. Whatever the trend, sunglasses were secured as an essential accessory for people of all ages.
